Description

Looks like the power supply connector was bypassed.
Name in the registry was "Byte Shop 60" until March 2018. The name of the first owner is a better choice.

History

Adam Duston bought this computer, #45 in the Apple-1 Registry, at the Byte Shop in 1976.
Purchased from Adam Duston in August 1996 by David Larsen.
For auction (including replica ACI) at Charitybuzz on June 21, 2018. The highest bid was surprisingly US\$210,000 but did not meet the reserve. After the auction, much higher prices were offered.
Current ownership: After the 2018 auction, David Larsen received several offers, including one from the curator of the Apple-1 Registry, as they have known each other for years. In 2015, Achim Baqué visited David Larsen in Floyd and stayed at his home for two days. David showed him his unbelievably huge collection, including three or four of his Apple-1s. David offered his whole collection, and Achim was ready to buy it in 2016, but Lonnie Mimms was faster. Lonnie bought all but two Apple-1s.
Eventually, this Apple-1 was bought in a private deal after the auction by Achim Baqué in 2018. David had some offers even much higher than Achim’s, but luckily for the new owner, he sold it to him. Achim visited the Larsens again in 2018, was invited to their home, and pictures and videos were made of the handover. It is the fourth Apple-1 for the happy new collector.
It was on stage and exhibited at the Vintage Computer Festival West 2019 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. Daniel Kottke demonstrated with this Apple-1 what he had to do as a test procedure at Steve Jobs' parents' garage in 1976.

Components

White ceramic MOS MCS 6502 CPU (4176), plastic Synertek SY6520 PIA (7630). Originally 4 KB plastic DRAM MK406N-11 (7620) + 1 single DRAM chip at B13. Later upgraded by David Larsen to 8 KB DRAM (mix of Mostek, some MK4096-16). PROM A2 from 1978.

Equipment

Replica Cassette Interface.

State

Video RCA connector added (the same modification is found on number 45 in the Registry). Two additional chips on sockets in the proto area. Many added wires on the back. Blue keyboard connector. Power cables soldered directly to the mainboard (later removed by David Larsen). Blue capacitors.
On the back, two cut traces reconnected with red wire.
Some ICs replaced.
Seven DRAM chips added by David Larsen.
The blue socket was replaced with a black one in 2018. The silver capacitor was changed. Additional chips on the breadboard were removed by David Larsen.
After these new modifications in 2018, the board looks different compared to earlier pictures. Some other Apple-1 boards still have the blue keyboard socket—a modification done by first owners. For some, it now looks more like boards from the factory. The RCA connector added by the first owner is still present.
